The Long and Winding Road

Blakc Mould started as a collection of songs I wrote and recorded at home in the spring of 2006. The whole project was a welcome breather from a comic book project I had been struggling with and was basically done just for fun. That Fall I left for Baltimore to do my MA and in the following years music would stay off my main path. I did keep making songs though, and in 2011 Leon Muraglia offered to produce the record.

Leon is a musician and producer who has collaborated with names such as Hans-Joachim Roedelius (Cluster) and Damo Suzuki (Can). Soon we had the amazing Christian Næss in to play drums while Leon layed down some bass. Things were starting to sound a lot more pro – but then I moved to Zürich and everything was more or less put on hold. In Zürich however, I met Jeroen Visser who was kind enough to add a beautiful clarinet arrangement to one of my later compositions – so things were kind of moving forward. When I returned to Oslo in 2013 my focus was still on other projects – I was making a short film, a web comic and an interactive installation – there was really no time for music. I was also finding it hard to believe in the project, despite Leon's insistence on the viability of my musical creations. Nevertheless, in 2015 I decided it was time to finish the album and we talked Aleksander Tidemann and Vegard Vartdal into contributing on drums and bass, elevating the quality of the remaining tracks by giant leaps.

Now it's 2016 and the record is done. The result is naturally hard to judge from my own point of view. It's art-rock with progressive influences, but with the sound of the indie 90s. I think my friend put it best when he said "it's got a lot of that Day-in-the-Life-stuff going on". So I guess McCartney has made his impact – but my musical influences are many: King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Tom Waits, Portishead, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Mr. Bungle, Outkast, Frank Zappa, Seigmen, Motorpsycho, Joni Mitchell, Michael Jackson, A-ha, David Bowie, Thomas Dybdahl, The Cumshots (yes, I'm all over the place). A couple of people have mentioned Sparklehorse – who I love, but had not yet heard when the bulk of the album was written. I suppose it just must be experienced. Hopefully you can be the judge yourself when the album is out!
